And that team is fighting for its life right now. (It may always be fighting for its life, honestly, but things feel particularly dire at the moment).

I grew up wanting to be President. I studied American Government at Georgetown and went to law school the minute I graduated.

Somewhere during that time I realized I was too idealistic for such a pursuit (though I continued to practice law for five years before leaving for greener pastures, or at least more personally-fitting pastures).

I am too “flower-hearted” for such a profession, to quote poet Nikita Gill.

In fact, because her poem is so inspiring to me, and because I’m hoping it may be for you too, I will share it here—

I will not give up

the flowers in my heart

just because the world

is a hard place.

The world

is only a hard place

because it needs more

flower-hearted people.

Anyway, I am flower-hearted, and this world is often not.

I say this all to preface something important—

I know that the world outside (especially if you are in the United States) looks dark right now. There is a lot of darkness that we may have only imagined outside the boundaries of our country. (If you don’t know what I’m referring to, I would point you to the work of journalist Jessica Yellin, writer Rebecca Solnit, and historian Heather Cox Richardson.)

BUT- and I mean this- the world is also very beautiful. In fact, to quote my favorite poet, Mary Oliver—
